ECOLOGIES OF MARBLE
A DIACHRONIC PERSPECTIVE
WHO WE ARE
Our network is funded by the DFG and started its work in 2025. We are fifteen international researchers – mainly historians of art and architecture, but also experts from the fields of archaeology and sociology – who deal with the topic of marble and ecologies in different ways.

We explore the inter-dependences between marble used in art and architecture and the ecological system. This relationship is conceptualized in a very broad sense: an environment of the highest complexity that correlates with the organisms - including humans – that live in this system and generate it at the same time.

OUR FOCUS

-
Transformation – We are interested in processes of change, whether material, formal, structural or functional, in relation to ecological parameters such as extraction, diversity, density or spatial factors.
-
Perception – We are interested in modes of experiencing in relation to ecological parameters such as habitat, distribution, or disposition.
-
Epistemologies – We are interested in practices of theorizing in relation to ecological parameters such as hierarchies, explanatory models or scientific approaches.
